Private MSK Ultrasound Scans

private msk ultrasound scans

In skilled hands, ultrasound is an excellent imaging tool for the assessment of joint conditions.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound scans can assess the joints for common problems such as arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, fluid in the joints, carpal tunnel syndrome etc... Ultrasound scans are often particularly advantageous over other imaging modalities such as MRI because the sonographer can dynamically assess the joint whilst performing the scan. In addition, ultrasound scans are cheaper than MRI,  completely safe, quicker to perform and have no contraindications such as claustrophobia or containing metal in the body (sometimes you cannot perform an MRI scan if the patient has history of metal in the body, such as after certain surgical procedures).

The following list comprises of the most common musculoskeletal ultrasound scansl:

About Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound

In skilled hands, ultrasound is an excellent imaging tool for the assessment of joint conditions.
Ultrasound examination of the musculo-skeletal system (MSK) provide information about the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue in the body.

An ultrasound scan will help in diagnosis of tendon tears, such as tears of the rotator cuff in the shoulder or Achilles tendon in the ankle, abnormalities of the muscles, such as tears and soft-tissue masses, bleeding or other fluid collections within the muscles or damage to the major joints for common problems such as arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, fluid in the joints, carpal tunnel syndrome etc..

Ultrasound is often particularly advantageous over other imaging modalities such as MRI because the operator can dynamically assess the joint whilst performing the scan.
In addition, ultrasound is cheaper than MRI, completely safe, quicker to perform and has no contradictions such as claustrophobia or containing metal in the body (sometimes you cannot perform an MRI scan if the patient has history of metal in the body, such as after certain surgical procedures).

An MSK ultrasound scan will help in diagnosis of tendon tears, such as tears of the rotator cuff in the shoulder or Achilles tendon in the ankle, abnormalities of the muscles, such as tears and soft-tissue masses, bleeding or other fluid collections within the muscles or damage to the major joints

What are the limitations of MSK ultrasound scan Imaging?

It is recognised that ultrasound offers little or no diagnostic information for internal structures such as the gleno-humeral ligaments. Ultrasound is complimentary with other modalities, including plain X-ray, CT, MRI and arthroscopy.

It can also be hard to fully visualise internal anatomy of large patients as the sound has further to travel and therefore the returning echoes are weaker.

About Ultrasound

Diagnostic Medical ultrasound scan or medical sonography as otherwise known is a painless imaging technique utilizing sound waves to produce internal images of the body.
It is called ultrasound as the sound frequency being used is at the region of 1 to 20MHz. The human ear can’t hear these frequencies.
The sound waves are produced by the transducer or the probe as most commonly known. As they travel through the body they bounce back to the transducer due to various sound transmissions differences in tissues. The returning echoes are picked up by the probe and powerful computer analyses the echoes and creates the 2d image on the screen.
There are various kinds of ultrasound scans that can be performed and each looks at different organs of the body such as tendons, muscles, joints, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, uterus and ovaries to confirm or exclude possible pathology.
Unlike Ct and MRI, ultrasound does not use radiation and therefore is pregnancy friendly. It is also live and is ideal for musculoskeletal exams to evaluate moving joints.
