Superficial soft-tissue masses are common in clinical practice. Ultrasound is usually the first line method of examination of these soft tissue masses and therefore is regularly being used to evaluate of any superficial lumps visualised or felt in the body. Ultrasound is widely available, quick and cheap imaging modality when compared to MRI, that can also evaluate lesion vascularity. Ultrasound can also be used for follow-up examinations to evaluate changes or follow-up after treatment.
The most common causes of lumps in the body are ganglion cysts, lipomas and sebaceous cysts which are all usually easily identifiable on ultrasound. Other common problems which can show on the scan are hernias, masses, cysts, and hematomas.
Reasons for having a soft tissue ultrasound scan:
What is the purpose of this scan?

- Specific area swelling
- Pain caused by a lump
- Trauma causing swelling
What is included with this ultrasound scan?

What should I expect during the soft tissue ultrasound scan?
Our sonographer will explaine the procedure before the scan.
You will be asked to lie on the examination table and expose the area, where the lump is. A small amount of gel will be placed on the skin and the ultrasound probe will be moved in different directions to evaluate the area with the swelling.
During and after the examination our sonographer will discuss with you the finding and a report will be issued to take away.
