Superficial soft-tissue masses are common in clinical practice. Ultrasound is usually the first-line method of examination of these soft-tissue masses and therefore is regularly being used to evaluate any superficial lumps visualised or felt in the body. Ultrasound is a widely available, quick and cheap imaging modality when compared to MRI, that can also evaluate lesion vascularity. Ultrasound can also be used for follow-up examinations to evaluate changes or follow-up after treatment.

The most common causes of lumps in the body are ganglion cysts, lipomas and sebaceous cysts, which are all typically easily identifiable on ultrasound. Other common problems which can show on the scan are hernias, masses, cysts, and haematomas.
