What is a general ultrasound scan?
General ultrasound scans examine the organs and soft tissues of the body outside pregnancy, using high-frequency sound waves to build a real-time picture of what is happening beneath the skin. There is no radiation and no contrast injection, which is why these examinations can be repeated as often as monitoring requires.
Most people book one because of something specific: pain, swelling, a lump they can feel, a blood test that raised a question, or a change they cannot explain. Each of the seven scans below is performed by an HCPC-registered sonographer who explains the findings while you watch, and who writes the report themselves — so nothing is lost between the person who saw the images and the person describing them.
One honest note on scope: ultrasound is excellent for solid organs, fluid, soft tissue and blood flow, but it does not see through bone or gas. Where a different test is the right one, we will say so — before you book, not after.

Some symptoms need urgent assessment rather than an outpatient appointment. Call 999 or go to A&E now for sudden severe abdominal pain, abdominal pain with fever and vomiting, an inability to pass urine or visible blood in your urine, a hernia that has become hard or cannot be pushed back in, or a lump that appeared suddenly after injury with severe pain. The NHS runs same-day assessment for exactly these situations. A private scan can follow once you are safe.
