Ultrasound is regularly being used to evaluate abdominal aortic aneurysms.
An abdominal aneurysm is a swelling of the aorta, the main blood vessel that brings blood from your heart to the rest of the body. The aorta is around 2.5 in the abdominal area, it can, however, swell to more than 5 cm.
Aneurysms are more common in men of 65+ years of age than in women and younger men, and they can be fatal as a large aneurysm can burst. According to NHS Choices, 8 out of 10 people with aortic aneurysms or AAA die.
It is highly unlikely that small aneurysms will cause any symptoms, but large aneurysms can cause the following symptoms:- Intense back or abdominal pain
- Rapid pulse
- Nausea and vomiting
- Excessive sweating
- Shock
Although the causes of AAA are not fully understood, risk factors include obesity, high blood pressure, smoking and high cholesterol.

What should I expect during the ultrasound scan?
Before the scan, our sonographer will explain the examination procedure. During your scan, you will be asked to expose your abdomen by lifting your top-up. We will put some warm jelly on your skin, and we will use an ultrasound probe that sends sound waves in your body to visualise the aorta.
The scan is painless, and we will be able to tell you there and then if you do have an AAA.

- lisa cusdin8/09/2022I came to this clinic on 9/8/22 I had been experiencing bloating, constipation and some various other things. I had been quite worried and did not want to wait to get an appointment through GP/hospital so I decided to book a full abdominal and pelvic scan.
When I arrived I felt immediately at ease when greeted by Cara who was very warm and friendly. I filled out the forms and was seen on time, maybe a little before.
I then went in and met Dr Tareq Ismail and again felt very relaxed, he explained everything and I felt completely comfortable. He spoke to me throughout, explaining what he could see and was very respectful and ensuring I was comfortable and at ease at all times. Thankfully all was ok on both scans and this was a great relief. I can highly recommend this for peace of mind, the money was worth it and had there been any issues I would have known quickly rather than wait weeks and weeks.
Even my son in the waiting room said how friendly they both were.
I am so glad I went there and am very grateful for such a professional and respectful experience with really kind people.
I will definitely be recommending them to everyone.
Thank you both so much!
