What Can Be Detected in an Early Pregnancy Scan?

Depending on the stage of your pregnancy and how early you book, the scan may show:

  • Gestational sac (around 5 weeks)

  • Bring someone with you - You're welcome to have your partner or a support person attend the scan with you

During Your Early Pregnancy Scan

  • You'll lie comfortably on the examination couch
  • For abdominal scanning, gel will be applied to your lower abdomen
  • A handheld ultrasound probe will be gently moved over your abdomen
  • In some cases, a transvaginal scan may be recommended for clearer images (this involves inserting a slim probe into the vagina, which is safe and usually more comfortable than a smear test)
  • Your sonographer will explain what they're seeing on the screen
  • You'll have the opportunity to ask questions during and after your scan

After Your Scan

Immediately following your early pregnancy scan:

  • The sonographer will discuss the findings with you
  • You'll receive printed images of your baby
  • A detailed written report will be provided

How early can I have a pregnancy scan?

We recommend waiting until at least 6 weeks from your last menstrual period. At this stage, we can usually detect a heartbeat and confirm viability. Scans before this time may be inconclusive.

What if I don't know how far along I am?

Is an early pregnancy scan safe?

What if no heartbeat is detected?

If you're between 6-7 weeks and no heartbeat is detected, it may simply be too early. We would recommend a follow-up scan in 1-2 weeks. If you're beyond 7 weeks and no heartbeat is detected, our sonographer will explain what this means and discuss appropriate next steps with sensitivity and care.

Can I bring my partner/family member?

How long will the appointment take?
