Your appointment, from door to report

  1. 1
Arrival — about ten minutes earlyFind us at 5a Lucerne Mews, three minutes from Notting Hill Gate — directions here. A short check-in confirms your details and the scan you are booked for. If your preparation did not go to plan, say so now rather than worrying: we adapt.
  2. 2
Into the scan roomYour sonographer introduces themselves, confirms what is being examined and why, and answers anything before starting. You uncover only the area being scanned, modesty covers are standard, a chaperone is present, and a partner or friend is welcome in the room.
  3. 3
The examination itselfWarm gel, a smooth probe, and a screen you can watch. Your sonographer may press where it is tender, or ask you to breathe in, hold, or move — reproducing the question is part of answering it. Nothing happens without being explained first.
  4. 4
Findings, discussed with you in the roomBefore you leave, your sonographer explains what the scan showed in plain English: what is normal, what is worth noting, and what — if anything — should happen next. You will not go home wondering.
  5. 5
Your written report, usually within two hoursA formal report follows by secure email, written so your GP, physiotherapist or consultant can act on it directly. Delivery and sharing are covered in results and reports.
The small things people wish they had known

  • The gel is warmed, and it wipes off completely — no lasting marks on clothing
  • Internal examinations are shorter than most people expect, and you stay in control — say pause, and we pause
  • Children can usually be accommodated if childcare falls through — call ahead and we will plan for it
  • If English is not your first language, bring someone to translate — unhurried explanation is part of the appointment, not an extra
People are most anxious in the ten minutes before a scan, not during it. That is why the introduction is not a formality — knowing what the probe will do, where it will go, and that you can stop at any moment removes most of the worry before the examination even begins.
