The six-to-twelve-month wait — and why we scan the way we do

The pattern behind most men’s bookings is remarkably consistent: a nagging symptom that finally crossed a private threshold, and — as often as not — a proactive partner who actually picked up the phone. From our side of the probe, the typical delay is six to twelve months of quietly dismissing a dull ache, a testicular lump, or a change, hoping it resolves on its own. No judgement — but understand what that means: by the time you’re here, you’ve earned a proper answer, fast.

Silence in a darkened scan room terrifies male patients — the assumption is always that we’ve found something sinister and are composing the speech. So we narrate: what a healthy kidney looks like as we pass over it, what a normal liver looks like, what we’re measuring and why. The tension visibly drops — and that’s usually the moment a man mentions the real symptom he was too embarrassed to lead with.

If you arrive saying “it’s probably nothing, my wife made me come,” you’ll get the same treatment: direct, objective, mechanical — the anatomy and the numbers on the screen, a clinical framework with no emotional weight — which, in our experience, is precisely what makes it safe to talk.

Honest Scope

What men’s ultrasound can — and cannot — do

It can characterise testicular and scrotal findings with excellent accuracy, distinguish glandular from fatty tissue in the male breast, survey the abdominal organs, measure the prostate’s volume and the aorta’s diameter, and turn six months of wondering into a documented answer.

It cannot see the bowel through gas, examine the prostate’s internal detail the way urological MRI can, or promise that normal today means normal forever. Where a finding needs cells rather than pictures — a biopsy — or a specialist’s hands, your report says so plainly and routes you at honest urgency.

Some symptoms need A&E now, not a booking

Sudden, severe testicular pain — especially with swelling or nausea — can be torsion, a surgical emergency measured in hours. Severe abdominal or back pain with faintness, or inability to pass urine, are equally same-day emergencies. Go to A&E; the scan can follow. The NHS runs same-day assessment for exactly these, and it is excellent.

How we think about men’s scanning

Three principles that decide what we offer and what we decline.

Symptoms outrank screening

A testicular lump, blood in the urine or difficulty passing urine need reporting now rather than folding into a future check-up. Those go on urgent NHS pathways, and we will tell you so if you call.

A scan is half a health check

Ultrasound sees structure. Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and PSA are chemistry, and they come from your GP — often free, and frequently higher value than imaging.

Every scan earns its place

We do not sell bonding scans, whole-body packages without a question behind them, or annual repeats without a reason. If a scan would not change what you know or do, we would rather say so.

A normal scan is not an all-clear. It covers what ultrasound sees, at one moment. New or changing symptoms always need reporting, regardless of a recent clear result.

Men are, on average, worse at getting things checked. The useful version of that observation is not a bigger scan package — it is reporting the symptom you have been ignoring, to your GP, this week.

Where can you get a men’s health ultrasound in London?

IUS London is a CQC-registered diagnostic ultrasound clinic at 5a Lucerne Mews, Kensington, London W8 4ED — a quiet mews three minutes’ walk from Notting Hill Gate station, serving Kensington, Chelsea, Bayswater, Holland Park and the wider city.

FAQs

Men’s ultrasound scans — your questions answered

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book any of our men’s scans directly, and the report is written so your GP or a specialist can act on it without repeating anything.
I have found a testicular lump. What should I do?
Get it assessed promptly — your GP or our testicular scan. Most lumps are benign, but testicular cancer is the commonest cancer in younger men and it is highly treatable when caught early. Sudden severe testicular pain is different: that is A&E or 999 today, as torsion is time-critical.
Do you test PSA or check for prostate cancer?
No. We assess prostate size and how well the bladder empties, which helps with urinary symptoms. Prostate cancer assessment involves a PSA blood test, examination and, where indicated, MRI and biopsy — all arranged through your GP.
Do you offer semen analysis?
No. That is arranged through your GP or a fertility clinic. Fertility assessment belongs with both partners, and sperm factors contribute in roughly a third of couples.
How long is an appointment?
Thirty minutes for a single-region scan, and about an hour for the well man scan, which covers six regions.
Will there be a chaperone?
Available on request for intimate examinations — ask when you book or when you arrive. You can stop the scan at any point without giving a reason.
How quickly will I get my results?
Findings are explained on screen during the scan, and the written report is usually with you within two hours.
Is ultrasound safe?
Yes. It uses sound waves rather than radiation, so there is no dose to accumulate and scans can be repeated whenever they are clinically useful.
Do you offer blood tests?
No — we provide diagnostic ultrasound only. Testosterone, thyroid function, liver function and PSA all go through your GP.
Should I have a whole-body scan every year?
No evidence supports annual whole-body ultrasound in men without symptoms. A baseline, or a scan prompted by symptoms, family history or a monitored finding, is the more defensible reason to book.
