Which pregnancy scan do you need — and when?

It depends on your week of pregnancy and the question you want answered. As a guide: an early pregnancy scan from 6 weeks confirms the pregnancy and heartbeat (£119); a dating scan from 8 to 14 weeks establishes accurate dates (£139); a gender scan from 16 weeks reveals your baby’s sex (£139); and growth and wellbeing scans from 24 weeks track development through the third trimester (£149). Our baby scan package bundles scans across the pregnancy (£399).

One thing we say plainly: we do not provide the NHS screening scans — the 12-week combined screening scan and the 20-week anomaly scan happen through your NHS maternity pathway, and you should always attend them. Our scans work around those fixed points, adding reassurance, dating precision, and growth monitoring where you want them. Timing Matters

The weeks that matter — and the timing mistakes to avoid

Scan choice across pregnancy is fairly standard; timing is where things most often go wrong. Booking an early scan too early is the classic example — before around 6 weeks a heartbeat may simply not be visible yet, which causes worry that a week’s patience would have avoided. The NHS scans have their own windows for a reason: the 12-week dating scan runs between 10 and 14 weeks, and its combined screening test cannot be offered if the scan happens after 14 weeks — the window is strict. The 20-week anomaly scan runs between 18 and 21 weeks, and an appointment too early in that range can mean an incomplete assessment of your baby’s anatomy.

Later in pregnancy, growth scans are the most misunderstood of all: one scan shows your baby’s size, but only repeated scans show whether growth is progressing properly. That is why growth checks, where indicated, are planned at 2–4-week intervals rather than as one-offs — and why we keep your earlier measurements on file for comparison.

Why seeing the same sonographer changes the later scans

Where continuity makes a real difference is in the later stages of pregnancy. When the same sonographer scans you across the third trimester, we are not just comparing your baby’s measurements to population averages — we are tracking that specific baby’s development over time. It improves accuracy, reduces uncertainty, and builds trust: by the time you are having growth scans, we are interpreting a trajectory anchored in your earlier data, not judging a single snapshot.

Every pregnancy is individual — findings are always discussed with you at your scan, and our written reports are designed to be shared with your midwife or obstetrician.
When not to book a scan — seek urgent care instead

If you notice reduced or changed baby movements, contact your midwife or maternity unit straight away — do not wait, and do not book a scan first. For heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, severe headache or visual disturbance, or feeling seriously unwell, call your maternity triage line or NHS 111 urgently — or 999 in an emergency. In early pregnancy, bleeding with pain needs your GP, NHS 111 or an early pregnancy unit the same day. A private scan is never a substitute for urgent maternity care.

When to contact maternity care instead of booking

Reduced or changed fetal movements, bleeding, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache with visual disturbance, or sudden swelling of the face and hands need your maternity unit or triage line straight away, at any hour. In early pregnancy, severe one-sided pain, heavy bleeding, shoulder-tip pain or faintness need an Early Pregnancy Unit, NHS 111 or A&E the same day. A private scan should never delay any of these.

Scans answer questions, not calendars

Each scan exists because there is a point in pregnancy where a particular question becomes answerable. Too early and the structure is not visible; too late and the measurement loses precision.

Private sits alongside NHS

Booking privately does not affect your NHS scans, your screening, or your place in any pathway. Where the NHS scan is the right one, we say so.

Every scan earns its place

We do not offer bonding scans. If a scan would not tell you something that changes what you know or do, we would rather you kept your money.

Pregnancy scans — your questions answered

How early can I have a pregnancy scan?
From 6 weeks. Before that, a heartbeat may not yet be visible even in a healthy pregnancy — so scanning earlier often creates worry rather than reassurance. If you are unsure of your dates, our scan timing calculator will tell you the right week to book.
Do you do the NHS 12-week and 20-week scans?
No — the 12-week combined screening scan (10–14 weeks) and the 20-week anomaly scan (18–21 weeks) are provided through your NHS maternity pathway, and you should always attend them. Our scans complement that pathway; they never replace it.
Do you offer 3D or 4D bonding scans?
No. Every scan we perform is a diagnostic examination with a clinical purpose — 3D/4D “bonding” imaging adds no diagnostic value, so it is not something we offer. What you get at every appointment is a careful clinical assessment, explained to you on screen as we go.
Can my partner come to the scan?
Yes — your partner is welcome at every appointment, at every stage. For gender scans, family members are welcome too.
Do I need a referral to book?
No — you can self-refer for any of our pregnancy scans. Anything significant we find is reported in writing so your midwife or obstetrician can act on it promptly.
When do I get my results?
Your sonographer discusses findings with you at the scan itself, and your written report is ready usually within two hours — written so it can be shared directly with your midwife, GP or specialist.

Will a private scan affect my NHS care?
No. Your NHS scans, screening and appointments continue exactly as arranged through your midwife. A private scan adds information alongside that pathway; it does not replace an appointment or move you down any list.
Do you offer 3D or 4D bonding scans?
No. We are a diagnostic clinic and every scan we offer has to answer a clinical question. Bonding scans do not, so we do not provide them.
Are ultrasound scans safe in pregnancy?
Yes. Diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation and has been used in pregnancy for decades. There is no cumulative dose, which is why scans can be repeated where they are clinically useful.
