A truly false positive pregnancy test is uncommon u2014 most "false positives" turn out to have a medical explanation rather than a faulty test. Home pregnancy tests detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced by the cells that form the placenta. If the test is positive, hCG is almost certainly present in your body. The question is why.

How pregnancy tests work

Home pregnancy tests work by detecting hCG in your urine. This hormone is produced immediately after a fertilised egg implants in the uterine lining. Modern tests are highly sensitive and can detect very low levels of hCG, sometimes even before a missed period. Because they test for a specific hormone, a positive result almost always means hCG is genuinely present u2014 even if the pregnancy is not where it should be, or has already ended.

The most common explanations for a "false positive"

When people describe a false positive, they usually mean they had a positive test but are not currently carrying a viable pregnancy. There are several medical reasons why this happens:

  • Chemical pregnancy: a very early miscarriage that occurs shortly after implantation. The body produces enough hCG to trigger a positive test, but the pregnancy stops developing before it is large enough to be seen on a scan.
  • Recent miscarriage or termination: hCG can remain in your bloodstream and urine for several weeks after a pregnancy ends. A test taken during this window will likely be positive.
  • Ectopic pregnancy: if the fertilised egg implants outside the womb (usually in a fallopian tube), it still produces hCG. The test will be positive, but an ultrasound of the uterus will appear empty. This is a medical emergency.
  • Fertility treatments: certain fertility drugs contain hCG to trigger ovulation. Testing too soon after these injections can give a positive result that reflects the medication, not a pregnancy.

u26a0 When to get urgent help

  • If you have a positive test and severe one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, dizziness, or fainting u2014 seek urgent same-day medical care.
  • These are signs of a possible ectopic pregnancy, which requires immediate assessment.
  • Call 999 or go to A&E. Do not wait for a planned scan.

Evaporation lines versus true positives

Sometimes a test is simply misread. If you leave a urine test for longer than the manufacturer's instructed time (usually three to five minutes), the urine can evaporate, leaving a faint, colourless line. This is an evaporation line, not a positive result. A true positive will have colour (pink or blue, depending on the dye) and will appear within the specified timeframe.

From our practice

The most common scenario I encounter is a chemical pregnancy or lingering hCG from a very early loss, where home tests remain faintly positive but the uterus appears empty on scan. Patients are understandably distressed by the conflicting information. We take time to explain the science behind the lingering hormone and, crucially, we perform a thorough scan to rule out an ectopic pregnancy u2014 which is always the first priority. If you are in this confusing situation, an early pregnancy scan combined with blood tests is the best way to find answers. You may also find our guide on gestational sac development helpful for understanding what a scan should show in early pregnancy.

How common is a false positive pregnancy test?

True false positives (where the test itself is faulty) are very uncommon. Usually, a positive result means hCG is present, but it may be due to an early loss, fertility drugs, or an ectopic pregnancy rather than a viable ongoing pregnancy.

Can a faint line be a false positive?

A faint line with colour that appears within the time limit is usually a true positive indicating low hCG levels. A colourless line that appears after the time limit is likely an evaporation line, not a positive result.

How long does hCG stay in your system after a miscarriage?

hCG can remain in your system for several weeks after a miscarriage or termination, causing pregnancy tests to remain positive during this time.

Do fertility drugs cause false positives?

Yes. Fertility treatments that include hCG injections (such as trigger shots) can cause a positive pregnancy test if you test too soon after the injection.

What is a chemical pregnancy?

A chemical pregnancy is a very early miscarriage that happens shortly after implantation. It produces enough hCG for a positive test, but the pregnancy is lost before it can be seen on an ultrasound scan.

When should I have a scan after a positive test?

If you have a positive test and no concerning symptoms, a reassurance scan is best booked around six to seven weeks. If you have pain or bleeding, seek immediate medical assessment u2014 do not wait for a planned scan.
