General Questions
What is an ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan (sonography) is a painless imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of your body. The sound waves bounce off different tissues with varying reflection properties, and these echoes are recorded and displayed as an image. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, ultrasound doesn't use radiation, making it safe for everyone, including pregnant women.
Do I need a GP referral for an ultrasound scan?
No, you don't need a GP referral to book a scan at IUS London. We offer a self-referral service, allowing you to book your scan directly with us. However, if you do have a referral from your doctor, we're happy to accept it and send your results back to them with your permission. Book your scan online today.
How much do your ultrasound scans cost?
Our ultrasound scan prices range from £109 to £179, depending on the type of scan. Early pregnancy scans start from £109, while more specialized scans such as combined abdomen and pelvic scans are £229. For a detailed list of all our prices, please visit our ultrasound scan prices page.
How long does an ultrasound scan take?
Most ultrasound scans take between 15-30 minutes to complete. However, the duration can vary depending on the type of scan and the specific area being examined. When booking your appointment, we recommend allowing about 45 minutes for your entire visit, including check-in and receiving your results.
Is ultrasound safe?
Yes, ultrasound is considered extremely safe. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation. Instead, it uses sound waves to create images, making it suitable for everyone, including pregnant women and children. Ultrasound has been used in medical practice for over 50 years with no evidence of harmful effects when used appropriately by trained professionals.
Who will perform my ultrasound scan?
All our scans are performed by highly qualified sonographers and radiologists who are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Our team has extensive experience working in NHS hospitals and private practice. You can learn more about our expert team on our About Us page.

Preparation Questions
How should I prepare for my ultrasound scan?
Preparation varies depending on the type of scan you're having:
- Abdominal Scans: Fast for 4-6 hours before your appointment (water is allowed)
- Pelvic Scans: Arrive with a comfortably full bladder (drink 1-2 pints of water 1 hour before)
- Pregnancy Scans: For early pregnancy scans (less than 10 weeks), a full bladder is recommended
- MSK Scans: No special preparation required
For detailed preparation instructions for your specific scan, please visit our Preparation for Your Scan page.
Can I eat or drink before my ultrasound?
This depends on the type of scan:
- Abdominal Scans: No food for 4-6 hours before your appointment, but you can drink water
- Other Scans: You can eat and drink normally unless specifically advised otherwise
If you're unsure about the preparation for your scan, please contact us or check our Preparation for Your Scan page.
Do I need a full bladder for my ultrasound?
For pelvic scans and early pregnancy scans (less than 10 weeks), a full bladder helps provide clearer images. We recommend drinking 1-2 pints of water about an hour before your appointment and avoiding urinating until after your scan. For other types of scans, including pregnancy scans after 10 weeks, a full bladder is not necessary.
What should I wear for my ultrasound scan?
We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being scanned. Two-piece outfits are ideal for abdominal, pelvic, and pregnancy scans. For shoulder, neck, or breast scans, clothing that can be easily removed or moved aside is helpful.
During Your Scan
Will my ultrasound scan hurt?
Ultrasound scans are generally painless. You may feel mild discomfort from the pressure of the ultrasound probe, or from having a full bladder if required for your scan. For internal scans (transvaginal or transrectal), you might experience slight discomfort similar to a routine gynecological or prostate examination, but this should not be painful.
What happens during an ultrasound scan?
During your scan, you'll lie on an examination table while our sonographer applies a special gel to your skin. They will then move a handheld device (transducer) over the area being examined. The transducer sends sound waves through your body and collects the returning echoes, which create images on a screen. The sonographer will explain what they're seeing throughout the scan. For more details, see our What to Expect During Your Visit page.
Can I bring someone with me to my scan?
Yes, you're welcome to bring a friend, partner, or family member to your appointment. For pregnancy scans, we encourage partners to attend and share in the experience. If you'd like to bring more than one guest or children, please let us know when booking so we can try to accommodate your request.
Will I need an internal scan?
This depends on the type of examination:
- Early Pregnancy Scans: Transvaginal (internal) scans often provide clearer images before 10 weeks
- Gynecological Scans: Internal scans may be recommended for detailed views of the uterus and ovaries
- Prostate Scans: Usually require a transrectal approach
Internal scans are only performed with your consent, and our sonographers will explain the procedure thoroughly before proceeding.
Results and Reports
When will I receive my ultrasound results?
You'll receive your results immediately after your scan in most cases. Our sonographer will discuss the findings with you and provide a written report before you leave. For complex cases that require additional review, results may be provided later the same day or within 24 hours. Learn more on our Scan Results & Reports page.
Will I get images from my scan?
Yes, we provide images for all pregnancy scans. For non-pregnancy scans, images can be provided upon request. These are given to you in digital format that you can save and share.
Can you send my results to my doctor?
Yes, with your permission, we're happy to share your scan results with your GP or specialist. Please let us know at the time of your appointment if you would like us to do this, and provide your doctor's contact details.
What happens if something concerning is found on my scan?
If your scan reveals any findings that require further investigation or treatment, our sonographer will explain this to you clearly and sensitively. We can provide guidance on the next steps and, with your permission, send your results directly to your GP or appropriate specialist. For more information, please see our Follow-Up Care page.
Pregnancy Scan Questions
When can I have my first pregnancy scan?
We recommend having your first scan (Early Pregnancy/Viability Scan) between 6-10 weeks. At this stage, we can usually detect a heartbeat (from around 6-7 weeks) and confirm that your pregnancy is developing normally. Learn more about our Early Pregnancy Scans.
When can I find out the gender of my baby?
Gender determination is possible from 16 weeks onwards. Our Gender Scan provides over 99% accuracy in determining your baby's gender, along with checking your baby's development and well-being.
How many pregnancy scans should I have?
The NHS typically offers two routine scans during pregnancy: a dating scan at around 12 weeks and an anomaly scan at around 20 weeks. Many parents choose to have additional private scans for reassurance and to create special memories. The number of private scans is a personal choice based on your preferences and circumstances. See our complete range of Pregnancy Scans for options.
Are 3D/4D scans available?
We specialize in diagnostic 2D ultrasound scans rather than 3D/4D "bonding" scans. Our focus is on providing medically relevant information about your baby's health and development. However, our high-quality 2D images still provide clear views of your baby and special moments for parents.
Payment and Insurance
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Cash payments are also accepted.
Do you accept private health insurance?
Yes, we work with most major private health insurers. Please check with your insurance provider before booking to confirm coverage for your scan. You may need to obtain authorization or a referral code from your insurer. Please bring your insurance details with you to your appointment.
Is there a cancellation fee?
No, we don't charge a cancellation fee. We appreciate as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule, but understand that circumstances can change unexpectedly.
