  • Discuss the procedure you're about to undergo
  • Answer any questions you may have before starting

The Ultrasound Examination Room

  • Clean, modern, and well-maintained environments
  • Temperature-controlled for your comfort
  • Dimmed lighting to improve screen visibility
  • Comfortable examination couch with adjustable positioning
  • High-resolution ultrasound equipment and display screens

During Your Scan

Getting Positioned

Depending on the type of scan you're having:

  • You may be asked to change into a gown or partially undress
  • You'll be positioned comfortably on the examination couch
  • For most scans, you'll lie on your back, though some may require side-lying or other positions
  • The sonographer will ensure you're comfortable before proceeding
  • Pillows and supports are available to help maintain comfortable positions

The Scanning Process

Here's what happens during the actual ultrasound examination:

  • The sonographer will apply a water-based gel to the area being scanned
  • This gel helps the ultrasound waves travel between the probe and your body
  • The gel may feel cool at first but warms quickly
  • The sonographer will use a handheld probe (transducer) that they'll move over the examination area
  • You may feel light to moderate pressure as the sonographer ensures good contact
  • For some examinations, you may be asked to hold your breath briefly or change positions
  • The images appear on a screen that you can usually view if you wish
  • For pregnancy scans, we position the screen so you can easily see your baby

Most scans are completely painless, though you might feel mild discomfort from the pressure of the probe or from maintaining certain positions.

Communication During the Scan

Throughout your examination:

  • Your sonographer will explain what they're doing and seeing
  • They'll talk you through key findings or images on the screen
  • For pregnancy scans, they'll point out your baby's features and movements
  • You're welcome to ask questions during the examination
  • If at any point you feel uncomfortable or need a break, please let your sonographer know

Duration of the Examination

The length of your scan will depend on the type of examination:

  • Simple, focused scans (e.g., dating pregnancy scans): 10-15 minutes
  • More detailed examinations (e.g., anomaly pregnancy scans): 20-30 minutes
  • Complex diagnostic scans (e.g., full abdominal assessments): 30-45 minutes

Your sonographer will work efficiently but thoroughly, ensuring they capture all necessary images without rushing.

  1. The ultrasound gel will be wiped away

Can I bring someone with me to my scan?
Yes, you're welcome to bring a support person to your appointment. For pregnancy scans, partners and close family members are encouraged to share the experience.

How should I dress for my scan?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being scanned. Two-piece outfits are ideal for abdominal and pelvic scans.

Will the scan hurt?
No, ultrasound scans are typically painless. You may feel some pressure as the sonographer moves the probe over your skin, but this shouldn't be painful.

Will I get my results immediately?
In most cases, your sonographer will discuss preliminary findings with you immediately after your scan. For detailed information on results delivery, see our Scan Results and Reports page.
