Early Pregnancy Scans

The early stages of pregnancy can be both exciting and anxious. Our Early Pregnancy Scan, also known as a Viability Scan, provides reassurance during the crucial first weeks when you may have limited contact with healthcare providers.

Designed for women between 6-10 weeks of pregnancy, this ultrasound scan confirms your pregnancy is developing normally and is located in the correct place (within the uterus rather than an ectopic pregnancy).

At International Ultrasound Services London, our early pregnancy scans are performed by experienced NHS sonographers using state-of-the-art equipment to provide you with clear images and accurate information during this important time.

What Can Be Detected in an Early Pregnancy Scan?

Depending on the stage of your pregnancy and how early you book, the scan may show:

  • Gestational sac (around 5 weeks)

  • Yolk sac (around 5.5 weeks)

  • Fetal pole (6–7 weeks)

  • Heartbeat (typically visible by 6–7 weeks)

  • Signs of a multiple pregnancy

  • Exclusion of ectopic pregnancy

If the pregnancy is too early to detect certain markers, we may recommend a follow-up scan after 7–10 days.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Before Your Scan

  • Arrive with a full bladder - Please drink 1-2 pints of water about an hour before your appointment and avoid urinating until after your scan
  • Bring someone with you - You're welcome to have your partner or a support person attend the scan with you
  • Arrive 10 minutes early - This allows time for registration and preparation
  • Bring any relevant medical information - Particularly details of your last menstrual period or any previous pregnancy complications

During Your Early Pregnancy Scan

  • Our friendly sonographer will welcome you and explain the procedure
  • You'll lie comfortably on the examination couch
  • For abdominal scanning, gel will be applied to your lower abdomen
  • A handheld ultrasound probe will be gently moved over your abdomen
  • In some cases, a transvaginal scan may be recommended for clearer images (this involves inserting a slim probe into the vagina, which is safe and usually more comfortable than a smear test)
  • Your sonographer will explain what they're seeing on the screen
  • You'll have the opportunity to ask questions during and after your scan

After Your Scan

Immediately following your early pregnancy scan:

  • The sonographer will discuss the findings with you
  • You'll receive printed images of your baby
  • A detailed written report will be provided
  • If any concerns are identified, we'll discuss appropriate next steps
  • You can book any follow-up scans if required

Transvaginal vs Abdominal Scanning

At this early stage of pregnancy (6-10 weeks), a transvaginal ultrasound often provides the clearest images. This involves using a slim, sanitized probe that is gently inserted into the vagina.

A transvaginal scan is:

  • Safe for you and your baby
  • More detailed than abdominal scans at this stage
  • Comfortable for most women (generally less uncomfortable than a cervical smear)
  • Optional - you can always decline this approach

If you prefer not to have a transvaginal scan, we can attempt an abdominal scan, though please be aware that images may be less clear, especially before 8 weeks.

Common Questions About Early Pregnancy Scans

How early can I have a pregnancy scan?

We recommend waiting until at least 6 weeks from your last menstrual period. At this stage, we can usually detect a heartbeat and confirm viability. Scans before this time may be inconclusive.

What if I don't know how far along I am?

If you're unsure of your dates, we can help determine this during your scan based on measurements and development. Just let us know you're uncertain when booking.

Is an early pregnancy scan safe?

Yes, ultrasound scans are considered very safe during pregnancy. They use sound waves rather than radiation and have been used in pregnancy for over 50 years with no evidence of harm.

What if no heartbeat is detected?

If you're between 6-7 weeks and no heartbeat is detected, it may simply be too early. We would recommend a follow-up scan in 1-2 weeks. If you're beyond 7 weeks and no heartbeat is detected, our sonographer will explain what this means and discuss appropriate next steps with sensitivity and care.

Can I bring my partner/family member?

Yes, you're welcome to bring your partner or a support person to share this special moment.

What should I wear?

Comfortable, two-piece clothing that allows easy access to your lower abdomen is ideal.

How long will the appointment take?

The scan itself usually takes 10-15 minutes, but please allow 30 minutes for your entire appointment.
